At the age of computers, virtual reality and 3D modeling, why hand sketching skills is still such a vital part of car design?
Hand sketching is still the best way to get an idea of the designer's head and on paper quickly and efficiently. 3D modeling application that manipulates the software to get the result that the designer wants. This process is often slow and difficult. Manipulation of the hand to draw the line you want to draw that much faster and easier.
To build a 3D model of a concept can take several days. To manually sketch a concept can be done in an hour or two. This means that many ideas can be explored far more effective and less time is invested in each idea. Often, when concepts are presented for consideration were immediately rejected. If some time has been invested in this concept, then it is lost.
Even in high-end design programs, such as Alias that many automotive designers use, basic drawing done by hand on a digital tablet.
