Stopping at a gas station feels terrible. Yes, this spill is BP's fault, but boycotting BP and putting money in the second Big oil-stained pocket just makes me feel stupid and helpless, like a pawn in the game do not want to play.
I am an American living in the suburbs. My lifestyle depends on being able to drive. I am not a politician or city planner, a multitude of factors other than changes, I probably am not going to take my job and go farm outside the network.
But I'm ready to do something, and I know that I'm not the only one feeling like this. There are things we can do now, even if we are not quite ready to turn into bio-diesel or buy a new hybrid car.

1 Auto transport. In my frustration with the car culture, I thought that these giants see the tow vehicle on the road must be the worst culprits, but it is the other way around. If you are moving across the country, let your carpool automobila.Zavod of Energy web site has done the math:
One gallon of gasoline produces 19.564 pounds of carbon dioxide. The average mpg for a car or SUV with 19 mpg.
One gallon of diesel produces 22.384 pounds of carbon dioxide. The average mpg for a truck auto transport 4.7.
Only one auto transport companies shipping over 90,000 cars within a 12-month period saves 2.926 million liters of fuel, which means 38.216 million pound reduction in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
2 Carpool. Since most of the day, we are moving across the country, we just go to work. We know about it, we have HOV lanes. So what is stopping us from carpooling? Laziness? Laziness? It is high time to get over those things that drive network sharing happen. Call for meeting Watercooler, send e-mail group to co-workers, neighbors, slip out leaflets in the tank. 3 Consolidate your trips just plan ahead a little. Keep your grocery list on the fridge and add to them daily. Be strategic and only slightly less frivolous.
4 Drive more slowly. I know that is not sexy, but it saves gas.

6 Do not wash your car. Washing your car uses tons of water, energy and electricity. Be dirtier.
7 Put some air in those tires. But to do when you're already at a gas station, do not make an extra trip! Under-inflated tires uses more gas. When you are ready for new tires, look for a model with low rolling resistance.
And do not forget, if you ever give up the countryside to farm or city where everyone walks, do not drive there. Keep your car hitch a ride with auto transport, and take the train.
